Pairing modules with the SmartKnob

Updated 9 October 2026SmartKnob

You connect a new module in two steps: first you send the SmartKnob searching, then you give the module power. The order matters. As long as the SmartKnob is not searching, it ignores unknown modules. That way two campers standing next to each other do not accidentally take over each other's devices.

1. Send the SmartKnob searching

On the SmartKnob, choose Connections, then Modules and then Add device. The LED ring around the knob now slowly pulses yellow, about every 3 seconds. This means: the SmartKnob is looking for new modules.

2. Switch on the module

Give the module power, that is insert the fuse or connect the power supply. Modules have no on/off switch, they start by themselves as soon as voltage is applied. On first start the module automatically reports to the SmartKnob.

How you can tell it worked

The LED ring briefly flashes green, a tone sounds and a message with the new module appears in the dashboard. This usually takes 10 to 20 seconds. After that the SmartKnob goes back to normal operation by itself. You do not have to confirm anything.

Several modules one after the other

After each paired module, the SmartKnob keeps searching for a short while and the LED ring stays yellow. Simply give the next module power.

With Lighty: right after pairing, the wall push buttons on Lighty stop responding. In the dashboard, create a light widget for each light and switch on Push button in it. Only then does that push button switch again. More on this in "Lighty without a SmartKnob".

Good to know: as long as a module is not yet paired, it keeps calling for a SmartKnob and uses noticeably more power than in normal operation. So do not leave an unpaired module switched on for days. Modules that are already paired do not call again after being switched back on.
